The Sailor Moon Retelling You've Been Waiting For

I feel like the Sailor Moon to pretty guardians to romantasy reader pipeline is HOT right now, so it’s no surprise this sub-genre of celestial fantasy/celestial romantasy/Sailor Moon retelling fad that I created is now popping up like crazy since my series hit completion in late 2025. For the (mostly) millennial (but you definitely don’t have to be) Sailor Moon fans, we crave a certain vibe from our books:

My own Sailor Moon retelling of the beloved anime began with one dark question:
“What if the prince who wears so many masks did so because he was ALWAYS the villain?”
Firstly, because I’m a millennial myself and our poor generation can’t catch a break, I’ve developed what a licensed psychiatrist would likely call, “A propensity to the darker aspects of life.” Don’t blame me, blame the 90’s (I miss you, Hastings). Therefore, for my debut novel, I wanted to write about a man who presents himself as our savior Tuxedo Mask…but rather than beating the physical mask thing like a dead horse, I’ll let him wear many metaphorical masks, instead. And they’re far more nefarious than any accessory ever could be.
What to expect from my Sailor Moon-inspired reimagining
The thing about writing a Sailor Moon retelling is that no one person will concretely agree WHAT makes a book a Sailor Moon retelling in the first place. Some people may expect a direct character-for-character story that mimics the plot, beat for beat. Similarly, others can see the parallels in general terms and see the inspiration. There’s also several different source materials of Sailor Moon, with multiple dubbings, series, producers, storylines, and formats that all have different elements to them. We also have to be upfront about copyright infringement. The Mark of Creation Chronicles is not a fanfic and never existed as one. This is a completely original piece of fiction that is its own story and can stand completely independent of Sailor Moon. Readers who’ve never engaged with a single piece of Sailor Moon media can and will understand the story, no exceptions.

There’s so much more to The Mark of Creation Chronicles series than its Sailor Moon lore.
